This is not a site that claims to be able to "beat Vegas". I don't have a system that generates guaranteed profits by betting point spreads, moneylines, or over/unders. Instead, my goal with this site is to provide analysis of what the various sports betting markets can tell us about key facets of the game: team strength, impact of injuries, impact of weather, etc. In addition, I hope that the work I do here can be used as a supplement and/or useful benchmark for the more fundamental statistical analysis that can be found on other sites (see the "Great Sports Sites" sidebar).
The key feature of this site is the Betting Market Ranking, which is a set of absolute power rankings, generated using the relative strength implied by the point spreads for recent games. I currently have rankings for the NFL, NBA, Men's College Basketball, College Football, and Major League Baseball. Time permitting, I hope to extend my methodology to Thoroughbred Horse Racing as well.
I primarily use Sportsdatabase.com for betting lines, over/unders, scores, and statistical information.
This blog quite literally would not exist without the work of Brian Burke and his great site Advanced NFL Stats. It was his community site that provided a forum for me to share my initial results on the Betting Market Rankings. His work is a model for meaningful, intelligent, and entertaining sports analysis.
And while I don't claim to have a secret formula for beating the sportsbooks, for those of you that do gamble on sports, I would welcome any comments on the work I do here. I hope you find it useful.
